BRANDED BOY BANDS (LOGO.EC OCTOBER 2012)
Whether you love boy bands or hate ’em, you can’t deny they’ve got major branding potential. From ’90s icons like Backstreet Boys to newbie acts like One Direction, check out the most unlikely products to ever be plugged by these baby-faced supergroups.
Boyzone x Sugar Puffs
Honey Monster rockin’ out with Boyzone on stage? Ah, 1996. Still, you have to hope the paycheque was worth it, Honey Monster got the best outfit – and hair. Sorry, Ronan.
*NSYNC x Chili’s Babyback Ribs
Forget Justified‘s tenth anniversary, JT’s real legacy will always stand as the face that sold 1,000 ribs. Reckon I can find this on a B-side anywhere?
Westlife x Post Office
As a group, when the best ad placement you can get is chatting with a Post Office rep about different types of broadband packages… yeah, that’s when you know you’re on the way out. Watching this kind of makes me want to hold a minute’s silence in tribute.
One Direction x Nokia
Now, the 1D lads have put their faces to every product going (srsly – everything from Pepsi to er, Pokemon), but 2011’s Nokia C3-00 campaign was something else. As well as these exciting interactive ads where you could ‘Find the Phone’, superfans could even check download soundbites from each teen as ringtones (you can get your very own Harry Styles ringtone here)!
New Kids on the Block x Coca-Cola
Keeping it simple by having NKOTB just do what they do best, perform (without including any cheesy endorsement lines), this was actually a pretty cool ad. Made back in 1991, footage was used from the group’s performance at that year’s Super Bowl game – definitely feeling those bomber jackets.
Jonas Brothers x Xbox
“What time is it?” “MORE FUN time!” Eesh. Sad thing is, this probably is as wild as it gets backstage at a Jonas Bros concert too.
Backstreet Boys x Burger King
To be fair, anyone probably would do anything for a lifetime supply of free Whoppers – even the Backstreet Boys. The harmonised dance routine in the BK uniform is a bit much though, the sell-outs.
The Wanted x Walker’s Crisps
After having loads of fun trying to guess the mystery Walker’s crisp flavour, the lads try to teach Gary Lineker a few Wanted moves before performing a version of ‘What’s that flavour?’ (Get it?) Somewhere, out there, Craig David is laughing all the way to the bank.
Take That x M&S
Easily the lamest ad on the list, this ad came out to coincide with Take That’s late Noughties comeback. Bonus points for appearing alongside Lily Cole, at least.
